|I have come to feel that Japanese paper( washi ) is something that I have received from God.
Japanese paper cannot be expressed simply by the word “SUKU,” and I feel that it is made with the help of some other force beyond technology.Maybe it’s better to say that new life is “born.”
When you are pouring Japanese paper into a washbasin, the rhythmic waves of the washbasin feel “life” as soon as the washbasin rises.
Satsuma Izaku Washi Art Creation Japanese paper mulberry trees in Isa’s mulberry fields. At a factory in Seiryo, Kagoshima City, the bark of the tree is boiled with high-quality wood ash to make paper, and washi is made using traditional and original methods.

History of Izaku Washi
●It is said that Nisshin-ko(Tadayoshi Shimazu) founded a paper making business for local samurai.
From the first year of Genroku period (1668) the Han Office has been called Yusuke as a protection policy for this project.
We set up a stockroom and grade the rest of the paper.
It is believed that ordinary people were also given the convenience of the lower house.
From this time on, Izaku washi became famous and began to benefit from it until the early Showa era.
●After that, the technology was passed on to a small number of people in Izaku.
Until 1950, Terahara and his son Hiroyuki were the last Japanese paper makers.
After that, the Izaku washi stopped running.
● However, in the late 1990s, Mr. Terahara handed over the technique of paper-strain in Izumi to Taneda, the founder of the Satsuma Izaku Washi Art Creation.
In 2006, Taneda formed the Society for the Restoration of Japanese Paper in Isa and revived it.
●The Society for the Restoration of Isa Washi held an exhibition of the revival of Isa Washi in 2011.
In 2019, it was succeeded to “Satsuma Izaku Washi Art Creation Taneda.”

Hiyoshi, Hitachi-shi, where the factory was located, is about 30 minutes by car in the neighboring town of Kagoshima.
It extends from the center of the Satsuma Peninsula to the west side of Fukue Beach
It was an area that was surrounded by mountains on the east side and was full of the nature of the mountains.
The village whose oak trees, we use to make paper is Hiyoshi, Hioki City.
It is situated in the depths of the eastern mountains.
It is a small village with about 10 houses.
It took a year and a half to refurbish the building with a kamado and fireplace.
The stable was rebuilt into a paper yard and the main building into an exhibition yard to rebuild the Isa Washi factory in 2006.
It is now the origin of the spirit that continues to be produced in the Satsuma Izaku Washi Art Creation.
