Japanese paper and human circles

I have come to feel that washi( Japanese traditional paper ) is something that I have received from God. Japanese traditional paper cannot be expressed simply by the word “SUKU,” and I feel that it is made with the help of some other force beyond technology. Maybe it’s better to say that new life is “born.” When you are pouring washi into a washbasin, the rhythmic waves of the washbasin feel “life” as soon as the washbasin rises. I believe that washi is the safe custody of God and his predecessors, and hope to evolve it further and share it with many people to bring out the goodness of washi, which has been adapted to the present.

Satsuma Izaku Washi

(1) Planting Kozo, the raw material for Washi paper

Kozo field

Kozo trees, the raw material for Izaku washi, are grown in Izaku area.

(2) History of Izaku Washi

- The origin of izaku washi is as follows "The washi making industry was durig the time when Jissin-kou(Lord Tadayoshi Shimazu). He was the great load, and it is said that he promoted washi production to the poor samurai class."( izaku-sonze Kon, 1903).
It is recorded that about 500 years ago. For this reason, Izaku washi is considered to be the oldest washi in Kagoshima.

-During the Kanbun period, Izaku people received guidance from Makita Jinshiro for further technical development.
-From the first year of the Genroku era (1688), the Satsuma clan adopted a policy of protecting izaku washi and established a storehouse of raw materials called the Kozo warehouse. The remainder of the paper was sold to the general public. From this time on, izaku washi became known throughout the country, and until the early Showa period (1926-1989), the residents of the izaku area received the benefits of this paper.

-The technique was then passed on to a small number of people at Izaku, and in recent years, Ichishi Terahara and his son, Yutaka Terahara, were the last washi makers.
In 2004, the technique was handed down from Yutaka Terahara to Tanegashima Tanegashima, the Owner of Satsuma Izaku Washi Art Creation.
In 2006, the "Association for the Revival of Satsuma Izaku Washi" was formed.
-The "Association for the Revival of Satsuma Izaku Washi" took the opportunity of the exhibition of Izaku Washi and other events in 2011, In 2019, the technique was passed on to "Satsuma Izaku Washi Art Creation".

The sugeta is vibrated and rippled to create a unique design of washi.

Based on the traditional washi papermaking technique called nagashi-suki, we use all kinds of washi processing techniques, including new washi art techniques and our own original techniques. We use a variety of washi processing techniques, including new washi art techniques and techniques of our own devising, to bring washi to life. Memories of Izaku factory

Due to termite damage, I am currently working at Kagoshima City.
It was a wonderful and memorable factory, so I've left a photo here.

Hiyoshi, where the workshop was located, is a town next to Kagoshima City, 30 minutes by car.
Surrounded by Fukiage Beach on the west side of the center of the Satsuma Peninsula,
and the mountains on the east side, it was an area with a lot of natural beauty of the sea and mountains.

It's located deep in the mountains
A small village with about 10 houses.

We were provided with an old private house with a kamado and interior decoration,
which we renovated by hand over the course of a year and a half.
Currently, it is the origin of the continued production at Satsuma Izaku Washi Art Creation.
